A few months after his divorce with ex-wife Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt was reportedly struggling to quit alcohol and drugs, in addition to recovering from the split. His story was featured in an exclusive interview with GQ magazine. He described the period after the divorce as “a weird moment” and confessed to having had a drug problem.
The former couple met in 2005 in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie. They started dating and got married the same year. Brad had left his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, the same year, after a 4-year period of marriage.
Brad’s drug addiction is said to have escalated quite fast, from casual drinking to the use of prescribed opium for his pain. Once his opium dosage was over, Brad went on to find cheaper substitutes through a dealer, and from there, became a full-blown heroin addict. According to him, the addiction is part of what caused the split with his wife. He described himself as a former “professional” drinker.
According to the investigative journalist Ian Halperin, the household was chaotic long before the divorce. The journalist explores the possibility that Angelina’s anger issues could have led to Brad’s constant drinking and smoking of marijuana. Apparently, the house was always in tantrums, and this is probably what the 41-year-old actress and philanthropist called “irreconcilable differences.” Despite these issues, the couple was always hailed as one of Hollywood’s most beloved unions. The divorce came after over 10 years of marriage. The two have six children together.
Her decision to file for divorce damaged Brad greatly and led to serious depression. He even had to leave his house to go live on a friend’s floor since his home was where his children grew up. It screamed of solitude every minute he spent there. After moving back to his house, he’s had to light a fire every morning and evening just to keep the place feeling alive.
The chaos actually started when the 53-year-old was on a flight to Los Angeles late last year. An argument erupted between him and Maddox, his teenage child. Authorities were quickly notified and an investigation was carried out. Although the incident did not lead to charges, his wife filed for a divorce just five days later. Her reason was that they had irreconcilable differences.
Brad has since turned over a new leaf and is facing his addiction in the public light. As of May, he had been sober for a good half-year. Despite the state of affairs, he has been involved in a lot of movies since September last year to date.
Just two months after the divorce in November, the Hollywood star played the role of a Canadian intelligence officer in the movie Allied. In the film, he joins up with a French resistance fighter in the period of World War II. Also in the old-style movie, Brad Pitt actually falls in love with the Marion Cotillard, the woman who plays the role of a French resistance fighter. It starts out with Brad landing in the desert of Morocco, and he later reaches the city. Marion has already been in the area for some time and is frequenting the nightclubs and getting to know some people in the Vichy government. At first, the two pretend to be married then things escalate as they team up. The thrill, romance, and suspense in the movie are what lured fans to it.
The movie ended up generating rumors that the two were involved sexually, but Marion clarified that nothing was going on. She was, in fact, pregnant with her husband’s second child. In the set, Brad was noted to be rather lean, probably from all the stress he had been through.
This year, War Machine, a movie based in Afghanistan, featured him as the main character. The film is satirical in nature, and Brad plays the role of General Stanley McChrystal, the man who the movie is based on. In this film, he is, instead, referred to as Gen. Glen McMahon. In the real-life story, the General resigned after a controversial magazine article appeared in the Rolling Stone magazine in 2010.
A book was also written on the subject, and this became the inspiration behind War Machine. McMahon’s staff in the movie is very loyal to him, and this feeds his ego to the extent that he starts talking ill of the president, and the Rolling Stone magazine writers catch up with what’s going on. He also leaks an assessment of conditions against the direction of the president. Also, he does interviews with the press and ends up revealing self-destructive information. Basically, the movie is about a member of the military who is destroyed by his big ego.
Besides movies, Brad has also been showing positive signs of recovery in his home area. He has been attending AA meetings religiously for many months now. As is the custom with AA meetings, members are given gifts after going for a certain period without drugs. Brad has received tokens a number of times because of his commitment to the program. His current therapist is the second one he got after the divorce, and apparently, he has helped Brad get much better. The Batman actor even apologized to his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, for the pain he caused her in the 2005 divorce. Because of the therapy sessions, he has been able to learn how to express his emotions.
His incident only goes on to emphasize how important it is to accept your problems if you intend to get past them. Instead of being ashamed of his addiction, he faced it in the limelight and has eventually been able to overcome it.
Brad has moved back to his house, where he now lives alone. Lucky for him, Angelina bought a 6 bedroom house just a short distance away. She lives with their 6 children there, and this allows him to see them once in a while. Recently, he was seen moving a huge tree to his house, possibly in an effort to renovate the property and get beyond his past.
